Mercury

The toxicity and bioaccumulation of mercury underscore the environmental importance of mercury monitoring programs. In coal-fired power plants, accurate measurement of mercury is essential to the development and implementation of the most cost-effective mercury emission control strategy.

CONSOL R&D offers extensive experience in mercury analysis of fuels, process solids and waters, and emissions via Method 29, Ontario Hydro and sorbent media.

CONSOL R&D has joined with SKC, the leading producer of sorbent tubes in the US, and Clean Air Engineering, a leader in emission testing, to develop a turnkey approach to Appendix K mercury monitoring.

Mercury Measurements at Coal-fired Power Plants
CONSOL R&D has been determining mercury in coal, ash, FGD effluent, and process waters from coal-fired power plants for over 20 years. In the past 5 years, CONSOL R&D has performed mercury balances at more than 20 full-scale power plants. Material balances on the majority of these tests closed within 100± 20%, verifying the accuracy of CONSOL R&D mercury determinations. Our experience with power plant effluents has been successfully applied to determining mercury in many other matrices.

Appendix K Mercury Testing Services
CONSOL R&D has joined with SKC, the leading producer of sorbent traps in the US, and Clean Air Engineering, a leader in emission testing, to develop a turnkey approach to Appendix K mercury monitoring. This Mercury Emissions Testing Team (MET-Team) has quickly become the leader in offering Appendix K sorbent traps, sampling instrumentation and services, and analytical services as an alternative to mercury CEMs to coal-fired power plants.
