Particulate matter & emissions monitoring

CONSOL R&D has provided coal combustion sampling and analytical laboratory services for over 30 years, performing hundreds of full-scale testing programs and emissions evaluations on facilities across the United States in partnership with power producers, utilities, U.S. DOE, EPA and EPRI and state government agencies.

Comprehensive mercury field-testing and analytical services are available to assist power plant operators and owners determine mercury emissions, co-benefit mercury removal potential and compliance options, including the selection of pollution controls to meet compliance goals, reduce cost, and minimize operating problems.

Experience

  • Recognized leader in emissions measurement and analysis for more than 20 years.
  • Unsurpassed experience in full-scale electric utility field tests for mercury measurement, speciation and abatement.
  • Advanced understanding of air pollution control device effects on mercury speciation.
  • State-of-the-art laboratory facilities providing solid and liquid analyses to numerous clients.

Projects

  • Awarded numerous contracts by electric utilities to perform mercury speciation and mass balance testing.
  • Awarded a variety of field and analytical projects for power producers.
  • U.S. DOE has awarded CONSOL R&D a three-year cooperative agreement to examine the effect of SCR on mercury removal in ten power plants with FGD.

QA/QC

  • Experience equals quality.
  • Mercury sampling and analysis is complex and, if not completed with very high QA/QC standards, can easily result in erroneous data.
  • Analytical instrument calibrations validated using NIST reference materials.
  • Selected samples are analyzed in duplicate and selected liquid samples are spiked with mercury and reanalyzed
  • All sampling equipment is CONSOL R&D owned/maintained and all sample analysis is performed in-house.

Title V Compliance Testing

  • Annual testing of emissions to satisfy Title V permit require¬ments for SO2, NOx, CO, nmVOC, and particulate matter.
  • Same day or next day results are often possible.
  • Protocol-to-test report capability.
  • All analyses are performed in-house = full control of data quality.

Ontario Hydro Method

  • Four 2-hour test sets to assure test data quality.
  • Sampling closely coordinated between all sampling locations and operations.
  • Process solid and liquid samples from all mercury inlet and outlet points.

Mercury Mass Balance

  • An integral part of mercury measurement and speciation determination.
  • Validates data and provides confidence to support mercury compliance decisions.

Analytical Expertise

  • CONSOL R&D's Analytical Lab is a recognized leader in coal/power generation industry.
  • Leader in ASTM D5 coal and coke analytical method development.
  • Impinger solution mercury concentration measured with cold vapor atomic absorption spec-troscopy (CVAA) as specified by EPA Method 29 and Ontario Hydro Method.
  • Mercury content of solids is determined by ASTM D6722 using high temperature combustion atomic absorption spectroscopy.
  • Calibration with commercial mercury standards.
  • Calibration validated with NIST Standard 1641D.
  • QA/QC sample spikes and duplicates as per the Ontario Hydro method.

Data Analysis and Interpretation, and Project Report

  • On-site data reduction and review.
  • Three-tier quality review of all field and analytical data and calculations by professionals with 20+ years of experience.
  • Results reported on concentration (ppm), mass flow rate (pound per hour), and lb/TBtu basis.
  • Review of control room data from test periods for trend analysis.
  • The most comprehensive reporting available.
  • Reports provided in confidential electronic and paper formats.
